The Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative (ATCRI) is an initiative of Cancer Research U.K and the American Cancer Society (ACS) to respond to the challenge of well-focused, coordinated and well resourced tobacco control programming in Africa . The Initiative is being hosted by Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN). ATCRI will promote the adoption, implementation and enforcement of effective in-country tobacco control policies, legislation and programmes across the African continent by providing the platform for information sharing, institutional support and capacity building among all tobacco-control stakeholders.ATCRI is currently the most ambitious tobacco control project in the continent.
The initiative is expected to grow to become the programming hub for tobacco control in Africa . The idea of a regional initiative came out after a need assessment conducted among tobacco control advocates and public health experts from the continent.
